Privacy in Court Documents

More and more court documents are available online so the Maryland courts have decided to make a new rule to protect the privacy of litigants’ data. Rule 1-322.1 limits what personal data can be published on the Web.

As of July 2013, Maryland courts will not allow attorneys and litigants to file court documents that publicize several types of personal information. From now on, court filings that include a party’s Social Security number, taxpayer identification number, or account numbers may be stricken. If this personal information is necessary to continue with the case, the clerk of the court has an obligation to notify you of its publication.

In our increasingly connected world, it is more important than ever to protect your personal data. Names and information on court documents used to be hidden in a filing cabinet, but now they are searchable online. Make sure you know what information is available about you online.
